When to take maternity photos?

A Guide for Expecting Moms. Eva White Photography

In my 14 years experience as a maternity photographer, I’ve found that the best time to take maternity photos is when you feel good and your baby bump is round & showing enough. For most expecting moms ideal time is during your 7th or 8th month of pregnancy, or around 28-36 weeks.

If you’re a first-time mom, you typically won’t show as quickly, so you can book your session towards the end of that window. If you’ve been pregnant before, you usually show a bit faster, so you can book your session in the earlier timeframe. When You're expecting multiples, of course the time frame needs to adjust.

Tip #1 - How far in advance you should contact your maternity photographer?

Ideal time for maternity photo session is 28-36 weeks. This means you’ll want to start connecting with photographers to secure a date right around the start of your second trimester. Popular photographers often book up months in advance. Reach out to your chosen photographer early to secure your spot. I like to schedule maternity sessions about 5-4 weeks before shoot date so there’s plenty of time to discuss the styles you would like to create, plan outfits, logistics, etc.

Tip #2 - Ideal time for your pregnancy session

Ideal Timing: 28-36 Weeks

The sweet spot for a maternity photoshoot is usually between 28 and 35 weeks of pregnancy. During this period, your belly will have a lovely, round shape that's perfect for photographs. You'll still feel relatively comfortable, and the risk of early labor is lower.

  • 28-32 Weeks: If you’re carrying multiples or experiencing complications, aim for the earlier part of this window. You’ll have a noticeable bump, and you’re likely to feel more energetic.

  • 32-36 Weeks: For most pregnancies, this is the prime time for maternity photos. Your bump will be prominent, and you’ll still have the energy to enjoy the session.

"It is important to capture these moments because you won’t be pregnant forever, and your pregnancy will fly by quicker than you anticipated."

Tip #3 Season and Weather if planning an outdoor shoot

Over the 14 years as a pregnancy photographer, I did sessions in so many different locations in London. I can give advice on the best locations for your pregnancy photo session.

If you would like to have your session outdoors, consider the season and weather. Spring, summer and early fall typically offer the most pleasant weather for outdoor maternity shoots. Booking in advance allows you to plan around potential weather changes and ensures you get your preferred photographer. In case of the bad weather, I am happy to reschedule your session or move it to studio.

Tip #4 37-38 weeks too late for maternity session?

Absolutely not too late! There's no reason why you can't have beautiful maternity photos taken. Need a last minute maternity photographer in London? Look no further!
